How to Start a Small Garden in Your Apartment
People start indoor gardens for several reasons. Some individuals find the process of growing one’s own food rewarding. For others, it is a way of cutting costs. You also have people for whom the process of leaving their apartment to find and buy food is too challenging. Regardless of the reason, anyone can start a small garden in their apartment.
The key is to persevere. Don’t expect positive results overnight. Neither should you allow a few failures along the way to discourage you. The fact that you have never operated a garden of any kind means that your chances of failing are quite high.
But if you keep experimenting, your garden will eventually flourish. Keep the following in mind:
1). You need to start small. Because failure is a distinct possibility, there is no point in committing large chunks of your apartment to a garden when you don’t quite know what you are doing. So, start small. Get a pot, add some soil, and buy some plants. If you can successfully grow one plant in a pot, you can experiment with a few more pots.
2). The location matters. Plants need sunlight. Therefore, your chosen location must provide access to sunlight. On the other hand, you need to keep artificial sources of heat like ovens and radiators away from your plants because they will cause fluctuations in temperature that your plants do not appreciate.
Windowsill gardens are quite popular. You can position your pots or boxes either inside or outside the window. Some people prefer vertical gardens. This is where you position your pots and boxes on shelves. You could also affix them to a wall, possibly even placing them in hanging containers.
Your choice of a location does not matter, so long as your plants can access the sun. If you cannot find a suitably lit location, get natural light bulbs.
3). Try to experiment with as many types of plants as possible. But keep the numbers of each type of plant small. That is to say, there is no need to grow more than two or three tomato plants. Instead, you should add pea shoots, strawberries, radishes, spring onions, and more.
4). Get good soil. You cannot grow healthy plants without good soil. Find a reputable store and tell them what you want to grow. They will find you the appropriate soil for your needs. Once you have your pots of soil, add a few worms.
5). Don’t forget to water your plants. Do some research to find out the amount of water each plant needs. After this, you need to set a watering schedule. Don’t water your plants haphazardly. The same goes for weeding.
