Video: Some More Of Sailfish UI Explained
Comes via kicknetwork nice of Jolla’s CEO Marc Dillon to explain a few more questions about the UI functionality.
Seems many of the functions are still being developed further and so you can see why they weren’t shown in the original video demos.
Here’s also another more in-depth video showing the UI in Finnish thanks Jesse for the tip:

I was here when they shoot it (*emotions*) !!!
So you went in the end – good move! Must have been amazing to see Sailfish in the flesh! Did you you get a chance to play with it BTW ?
Indeed I got. I’m still somehow shocked by that announcement. It is … SOOOOO AWESOOOOMMEE !!!! Follow sfietkonstantin.wordpress.com or jollafr.org if you understand French (Google understand it well) for infos
He said nine apps, right? I wonder what will happen if you have more than four apps open. Is that possible to see in any of the videos?
Maximum of 9 apps open possible in multitasking, but he hinted they are looking at developing that further. Not sure how more than 4 would look – still not seen any evidence showing off of that.
In that finnish video they said that you can see only 4 most used apps at once in the home screen, all can be seen by long press on any of the apps seen at the moment. There you can also close the apps. It’s at about 4:10 on the video.
Some advantages of being finn
only 9???? N9 better here
Ofc it can handle way more than 9, you just dont understand the UI concept.
In this video you can see five apps open at 19:30
I think they are freezing.
I think i saw in the UI demonstration that from the 5th one it goes to the right, although I’m not sure.
Hi,
There is video in Finnish where they shows what it looks like with multiple apps and how to close apps. Look at the 4:10 time http://www.puhelinvertailu.com/uutiset.cfm/2012/11/23/jollan_sailfish-kayttojarjestelma_videoesittelyssa_suomeksi
Guy says that it will show only the most used apps and others you can see by long press. I don’t quite understand if this means that there shows only 4 or 9?? But anyway what the home-screen doesn’t show you can see by long press.
I can’t see more than 4 apps in that vid. But 9 instead of other number may be a clue. Do you remember that with Harmattan you can minimize cards/tiles/frames to go from 4 to 9? The question is to know if they still interactive in that smaller size. At 9:03 the guy makes a swipe from the right and something like full notifications appears.
Here is how to close apps (4:10): http://i.imgur.com/F3vxg.jpg
And here is the notification list (9:03): http://i.imgur.com/9D914.jpg
In the video he just “peek” the notification list, I think this is a full notification page (like Harmattan)
Oh yes – good spotting!
I’m not a fan of closing apps like that, I hope they bring back swipe-to-close in whatever preferred direction (based on how their system works, I imagine left or right makes most sense).
Personally I thought swipe-to-close was one of the N9′s best features, and it’d be a shame if it didn’t appear (at least as an option) in Sailfish.
agreed.
Great video, thanks for that.
No limit to multitasking number of apps, the issue is how many covers you can display on the homescreen. Since each app can be pushed to the homescreen and that cover can have up to 3 additional states to it – usability becomes the factor, how small to go before I can’t use the covers function. If we understand that the demo hardware is the N950 we can see that 2×2 in large size and 3×3 in mini mode is the usable limit for the hardware. Now what happens when we move to larger screens and HD? Someone will make a design decision and say 9 or 12 covers is the max, since we have a infinite down scroll you would not want to scroll down 30 open covers to launch a new app. Not sure but if long press gets us to the “Meego task switcher” that shows all running apps it would be possible to push an app to replace an existing cover on the home screen matrix.
Jolla why u dont modify the multitasking view???
i think that if u adding Desktop view (instead scrolling finger down to applauncher u can scrolling left/right side to other multitask schedule) nearest the multitasking view. Then when u have more 4 opens apps, OS adds other Desktop view near.
Will be nice.. all scrolling down views make me boring! and so u avoid to fill the ones desktop view with a lot number of windows-open-app and avoid to resize the windows app
@mich
add your input to this thread (& the related google docs):
http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=87764
and why u did not show other important apps like PhoneSettings(show differences with Harmattan); like Browser web; Messagges Application; Default File Browser; and Camera App and Notifications Zone???
i think that Music and Gallery are not the main apps for a phone!
Maybe because they’re not polished enough yet? Just a wild guess…
u right! maybe it possible!
although I think in an mobile OS the first thing improved is the application development mobile with Dialer and Messages. Gallery and Music are secondary applications
so why not
They’re also more important (& in *some* respects more complex), & need to be working seamlessly, I’d say that’s why.
an operating system is based first on checking the hardware system for the specific purpose and later others driver and components, like network board and printer or mouse, in computing.
it is counterproductive to create an algorithm depending on specific functions rather than adapting algorithm with correct functions
What are you talking about? ATM it’s totally vague & make no sense, be more specific…
